Park Guell Barcelona. Visit Park Güell, one of Gaudí’s major works in Barcelona. Park Guell is an wonderful park designed by famous Spanish/Catalan architect and designer Antoni Gaudí. Park Guell is one of the seven works designed by the world famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the collective name 'Works of Antoni Gaudí.' Park Guell was built in the years from 1900 to 1914 on a plot of land that measures 17.18 ha (0.1718 km²) in total. When Park Guell was created there were many factories in Barcelona city center and Barcelona's air was quite polluted. Count Eusebi Guell bought the land on Carmel hill to build a housing project where wealthy citizens could escape the dirty air and noise of the city. There was already a manor house on the site of Park Guell, called Larrard House or Muntaner de Dalt House,  and the land was close to a residential neighbourhood of houses called "La Salut," which means "health" in the Catalan language. So the idea of a garden city with clean mountain air and views of the city center and Mediterranean seemed like a solid investment.

Tickets
Tickets to the monument area of Park Guell where the Gaudi structions are located, are from €13. You can buy Park Guell Tickets online up to three months before the visit. There might be a maximum number of tickets that you can order online. To ensure the preservation of the monument area of Park Guell there is a limit of 800 visitors per hour, so it's a good idea to buy Park Guell tickets well in advance. Please note that entrance to the Monumental Zone of Park Guell does not include access to the Gaudí House museum where Gaudí lived in his later years.

Park Guell history
The magic of Gaudi starts at the main entrance to the park where you are greeted by a fountain and a multicoloured mosaic lizard which has become an icon of Barcelona. This incredible fairytale like park was originally a residential estate developement, which was constructed from 1900 to 1914 by Gaudi for Eusebi Güell, Gaudi's wealthy patron. The residential project failed and much later Park Guell became a public park. Inside there are several iconic Gaudi creations including the fabulous serpentine bench on the nature plaza and the house where Gaudi lived for many years, which is now the Gaudi house museum.

Getting there
Park Guell is a bit tricky to get to. See directions. It's high on the Carmel hill in the upper part of the Gracia district of Barcelona. The easiest way to go is to take a taxi or the hop-on bus. From the hop-on-bus it's a bit of an uphill walk to the park entrance.

Park Güell main entrance is on street Carrer d'Olot in Barcelona, but there are 3 entrances in total three entrances:

Carrer de Larrard (main entrance),
Carretera del Carmel, 23, also coach park for tourist coaches
Passatge de Sant Josep de la Muntanya via an escalator.

Shuttle bus
A shuttle bus called Bus Guell connects to Park Guell from metro station on Plaça d'Alfons X by Alfons X metro station with is metro L4. Note: the shuttle bus service is only available to visitors, who have already purchased tickets to the Park Güell Monument area. Get to Plaça d'Alfons X on the yellow metro Line 4

Vallcarca station
Nearest metro station to Park Guell. The route from the station to the park is well signposted, but it is quite a steep uphill walk.

There are some outdoor escalators on some parts of the walk. It's a fun walk if you are fit, but hard work especially in the hot sun for the elderly or visitors who find walking challenging.

Lesseps station
Station is 1300 m from Park Guell which is a little further, but it is a more leisurely walk though still uphill - and well signposted.


By hop-on tourist bus
The hop on hop off tourist bus has a stop near Park Guell and stop at many other sights in Barcelona. But please note that hop-on-hop-off buses only stop on the street Travessera de Dalt so you still have to walk 900m slightly uphill to the Park Guell main entrance


Park Guell  park opening times:

The public part of the park is open from 10 in the morning until sundown. Admission is free, but this does not include admission to the monument area. The historical Gaudi monument part of the park is open at the following times: (please check before your visit)

Autumn-Winter from 25 October to 23 March:
08:30 h to 17:30 h

Spring-Summer from 24 March to 19 October:
08:00 to 21:30
